V3-01 Is God Unjust?
Walking Talking Bible Project
Did God favor Jacob over his brother Esau? Why? Does the idea of God favoring some over others seem unjust? Why might Paul have thought it necessary to include Romans 9:14-23? For whom does God work all things together for the good? These are just some of the questions to consider in this week’s edition of the Walking Talking Bible Project.
Bible Passages
The following Scripture quotations from The Berean Standard Bible (BSB) are provided for your convenience. Please feel free to use the Bible and translation of your choice.
Memory Passage: Romans 8:28
Romans 8:28
28 And we know that God works all things together for the good of those who love Him, who are called according to His purpose.
Connection Passage #1: Romans 9:10–13
Romans 9:10–13
10 Not only that, but Rebecca’s children were conceived by one man, our father Isaac.
11 Yet before the twins were born or had done anything good or bad, in order that God’s plan of election might stand,
12 not by works but by Him who calls, she was told, “The older will serve the younger.”
13 So it is written: “Jacob I loved, but Esau I hated.”
Connection Passage #2 Genesis 28:10–15
Genesis 28:10–15
10 Meanwhile Jacob left Beersheba and set out for Haran.
11 On reaching a certain place, he spent the night there because the sun had set. And taking one of the stones from that place, he put it under his head and lay down to sleep.
12 And Jacob had a dream about a ladder that rested on the earth with its top reaching up to heaven, and God’s angels were going up and down the ladder.
13 And there at the top the LORD was standing and saying, “I am the LORD, the God of your father Abraham and the God of Isaac. I will give you and your descendants the land on which you now lie.
14 Your descendants will be like the dust of the earth, and you will spread out to the west and east and north and south. All the families of the earth will be blessed through you and your offspring.
15 Look, I am with you, and I will watch over you wherever you go, and I will bring you back to this land. For I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.”
Connection Passage #3: Romans 9:14–16
Romans 9:14–16
14 What then shall we say? Is God unjust? Certainly not!
15 For He says to Moses: “I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion.”
16 So then, it does not depend on man’s desire or effort, but on God’s mercy.
Connection Passage #4: Romans 9:18
Romans 9:18
18 Therefore God has mercy on whom He wants to have mercy, and He hardens whom He wants to harden.
